Analysis
Utah lists Phillips at 5’10”, but other sources have the corner listed at 5’9″. Either way, he doesn’t play undersized. He isn’t afraid to get down and dirty with receivers, as evidenced by his matchup in 2021 with top ten draft pick Drake London. Phillips is very smooth and fluid, with light and quick feet and fluid hips that aid him in his transitions in pass defense. His background as a receiver is also clear in his ball tracking and playmaking ability. He pairs those skills with great reaction time to close on receivers quickly and either break up the pass or limit what his opponent can do after the catch. As far as areas for improvement, I’d like to see him work on his eye discipline, as receivers were often able to leak behind him as he kept his eyes on the QB. He’s also almost too physical, and that grabbiness has led to penalties. Overall, Phillips is a great prospect who still seems to be a bit under the radar, but I think he’ll likely be a second rounder should he declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.
